Nobody's Darling: I really love Arkansas

dude-zombiesateyourmom:

I don’t understand why people automatically assume that I’m going to think they are awesome just because they are not from Arkansas? I also don’t understand why they think I’m gonna think they are awesome if they nonstop complain about Arkansas and LIE about how they are about to move to…

Budget constraints prevent many people from eating right.

“I can’t afford to buy healthy food.”
“Fruits and vegetables are too expensive.”
“Grocery store prices are astronomical.”
“It’s cheaper to eat fast food.”

We hear these “excuses” every day—and they’re good ones. But we don’t give up that easily and believe any excuse can be overcome. Today we’re setting out to prove that healthy eating is possible on any budget.

We compared the cost of unhealthy foods from the drive-thru, freezer section and snack foods aisle to the cost of healthy foods. By making even one of these swaps, you can make room in your grocery budget for a few new healthy foods.

I appreciate this post, I really do.

But, low-income families generally don’t do Burger King. They do McDonald’s, where you can get relatively filling items for a dollar. McDonald’s is cheaper than Burger King, Jack-in-the-Box, Wendy’s, etc, and it’s considerably cheaper than buying healthy groceries. Food Inc. put it perfectly. When you’re low-income, it makes more sense to order a McChicken from the Dollar Menu than to head over the produce section of Walmart and pick out two or three pears for the same price.

These options are even cheaper if we have locally-produced means of getting it. This is one of the many reasons we have to insist that local farmers’ markets accept food stamps and WIC!

Life With Farmer John: Altering the Environment

angelvalleyfarm:

There’s nothing like an exceptional drought coupled with daily temperatures in the 100’s to get the ole creative juices flowing. (Other juices flow, too, while working outside in these conditions…but I’ll spare that detail.) Lately, that means coming up with ways to soften the blows Mother Nature…
